Restorative Practices

The Office of Peace & Policy aims to integrate various restorative practices throughout the City of Birmingham, including restorative justice. One of the many outcomes of restorative justice is the increase in social capital for community members after a community norm has been violated. This social capital loss may be experienced by both the harmed parties and the responsible parties. This raises the question about the larger community implications (health, interethnic perceptions, environment) of prolonged restorative initiatives within a community suffering from low social capital due to compound community trauma. The Office of Peace & Policy will focus on shifting this reality through both training and direct service. We intend to support our residents in building relational and accountable community.

“We need community to hold us in our dignity and to support transformative justice.”
